Canada continued to set new records for oil production in 2025. Canadian production averaged 5.35 million barrels per day (MMb/d) of crude oil and equivalents in 2025, up from 2024’s record of 5.14 MMb/d. Production grew throughout the year to a high of 5.64 MMb/d in December 2025.

Text Alternative: This stacked area chart shows monthly crude oil and equivalent production from January 2000 to December 2025 for Canadian provinces and territories. Alberta’s production grew by 182 thousand barrels per day (Mb/d) in 2025, while Newfoundland and Labrador’s production increased by 30 thousand barrels per day (Mb/d).
2025 provincial contributions of Canada's crude oil and equivalents volumes:
- Alberta, 83.8%
- Saskatchewan, 8.2%
- Newfoundland and Labrador, 4.5%
- British Columbia, 2.8%
- The rest of Canada under 1.0%
Key drivers and production trends
Alberta oil production increased the most year-over-year in 2025—adding 182 thousand barrels per day (Mb/d) or 4%—driven by growing non-upgraded bitumen production. Newfoundland and Labrador’s production increased by 15% (30 Mb/d) while British Columbia’s output increased by 7% (10 Mb/d). Saskatchewan’s production slightly declined in 2025 by 3% (-15 Mb/d). Ontario, Northwest Territories, and Manitoba also saw declines in production.
Since 2020, Canadian crude oil and equivalents production has increased steadily, setting a new record each year. Alberta has led this growth, driven by oil sands production, while Saskatchewan and Newfoundland and Labrador have seen low growth or declines over this period. Since the start-up of the Trans Mountain Expansion Project in May of 2024, more capacity is now available on pipelines leaving western Canada, and Canadian crude oil production in 2025 continued to grow towards filling that pipeline space.
