Annual Report on Travel, Hospitality and Conference Expenditures 2024–25

As required by the Treasury Board Directive on Travel, Hospitality, Conference and Event Expenditures, this report provides information on travel, hospitality and conference expenditures for the Canada Energy Regulator (CER) for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2025.
Travel, hospitality and conference expenditures incurred by a federal department or agency relate to activities that support the department or agency’s mandate and the government’s priorities.
The Canada Energy Regulator’s travel, hospitality and conference expenditures support the delivery of the following core programs and services to Canadians:
- Energy Adjudication: Making decisions or recommendations to the Governor in Council on applications, which include impact assessments, using processes that are fair, transparent, timely and accessible. These applications pertain to pipelines and related facilities, international power lines, offshore renewable energy, tolls and tariffs, compensation disputes resolution, energy exports and imports, and oil and gas exploration and drilling in certain northern and offshore areas of Canada.
- Safety and Environment Oversight: Setting and enforcing regulatory expectations for regulated companies over the full lifecycle - construction, operation, and abandonment - of energy-related activities. These activities pertain to pipelines and related facilities, international power lines, offshore renewable energy, tolls and tariffs, energy exports and imports, and oil and gas exploration and drilling in certain northern and offshore areas of Canada.
- Energy Information: Collecting, monitoring, analyzing, and publishing information on energy markets and supply, sources of energy, and the safety and security of pipelines and international power lines.
- Engagement: Engaging nationally and regionally with Indigenous Peoples and stakeholders through open dialogue, asking questions, sharing perspectives, and collaboration. These activities pertain to all decisions and actions related to the Canada Energy Regulator’s legislated mandate.
- Internal Services: Internal services refer to the activities and resources that support a department in its work to meet its corporate obligations and deliver its programs.

Significant variances compared to the previous fiscal year
Total travel:
Compared to fiscal year 2023-24, the CERs travel expenditures increased in 2024-25 by $243K, a 13% rise, primarily due to projects focused on Indigenous engagement.
Conference fees:
Compared to fiscal year 2023-24, the CER’s conference expenditures increased in 2024-25 by $14K, a 9% rise primarily due to initiatives related to Partnering with Indigenous Peoples and advancing Reconciliation to support the Government of Canada’s Reconciliation priorities.
